She Rises: MP Mathyssen holding national townhall on women’s equity with NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Co-Chair of NDP Women’s Commission Dirka Prout.
MP Lindsay Mathyssen is hosting a virtual zoom townhall focusing on women’s equity in 2020 and what solutions the NDP is fighting for to advance women’s equity in the age of COVID-19. The townhall will explore how the pandemic has disproportionately affected women negatively, particularly indigenous women, women of colour and women with disabilities.
“Because of the severity with which COVID-19 has negatively impacted women, I am pleased to be joined by two incredible leaders in our party, federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Co-Chair of the NDP Women’s Commission and Londoner, Dirka Prout,” said Mathyssen.
Statistics show that women have been uniquely impacted by the crisis. Many cannot return to work or must take more time off work to look after their children or ill or elderly family members because of the shutting down of schools, the lack of affordable quality childcare spaces, and the higher needs of elderly parents. As well as economic conditions worsening, there has been a 20-30% increase in domestic violence rates during the pandemic with women having to quarantine in lockdown with abusive partners.
On top of this, women's organizations and shelters are experiencing financial shortfalls and cannot provide desperately needed essential services due to governments’ reluctance to provide long-term, stable funding.
MP Mathyssen has been pushing several policy solutions including calling for a National Childcare Program, the establishment of core funding for women’s organizations, and paid domestic violence leave. This townhall will take place over Zoom for those who RSVP. To attend please fill out the form below.
